The rosary, a form of prayer favored by Catholics, may have been invented by one of the saints, perhaps St. Dominic. Though in early Christianity the Desert Fathers were known to keep track of the number of times they recited the Jesus prayer with a knotted string, Dominic used beads in the early thirteenth century.
Apparitions attributed to the Blessed Mother (Fatima) show her favoring the rosary as an acceptable prayer, which may account for its recent popularity. She said daily recitation would bring peace.
