I never heard from the boy whose life I saved. It was my first day as water front director in a private day camp when I noticed two of the lifeguards had pulled a small boy of color from the pool, and he was lying on the pool deck, unconscious. I hesitated not a moment, and applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation right away.
The lad revived, and the college-age lifeguards took over, sending him to the infirmary to recover fully. I was so happy to save someone’s life I never questioned the lifeguards about the details of that rescue.
I did thank God that I’d been effective in my job, and the good Lord kept me busier than I anticipated.
