Choosing the Good

On Facebook, today, I saw a video of a man freeing a mountain lion (that’s a big animal) from a steel trap.  First he had to get the animal’s head in a noose on a pole, which he used to keep the animal’s jaws and front claws away while he opened the jaws of the trap.  Then he had to jump back and release the lion.

But the lion didn’t turn on him.  There seems to be some kind of gratitude instilled in the lower animals by the Creator (who else?) that makes them recognize some personal services, a part of the mystery of life.

Would all humans do similar deeds, as return a personal service?  Not always.  Humans have free will, able to choose evil.

Understanding Onself

It was congenial seeing fellow teachers at the retiree’s meeting, and though I was sometimes lost for words, I can’t expect to be up to my younger self at these socials.  I can still enjoy a funny story or even tell one.  I needn’t understand the whole of the union president’s address about Covid 19; after all, I am eighty-seven.

The opportunity to attend this meeting is a gift from God, and to be cherished.  There are so many things that are a gift from God that if I didn’t feel loved there’d be something amiss.  Most likely that would be my viewpoint.  I have to watch that!

Vacation Travel Here

Egypt had a revolution in 2011, and it was put down by the military, if I recall correctly.  But the Muslim Brotherhood retained its power, and the country still struggles under the sway of Islam.

But right here in Woodbury is a cause for joy.  St. Mark’s Coptic Church is holding an Egyptian festival, which, if it is anything like the recent ones, is, beside its historic display of the pyramids, a gastronomic delight of Egyptian foods, made under the care of parishioners who are Egyptian natives.

If you’re looking for foreign travel and delights, they are right here in the USA, in Woodbury, where it is safe, and you can be home in a matter of minutes.  The kids would love to visit the land of Cleopatra, the pyramids, their tombs, and see camels enroute.  Go!

After Retirement

I passed the test!  My doc sent me to a neurologist to see how I was coping with old age, and one of the tests, besides knowing the date, the day, the year and the location, was remembering three words for the length of a conversation.  The three words were table, rose and apple.  Right away, I visualized a table with a rose in a vase and an apple beside it.  That stayed with me for the whole conversation, and hey, I won!

I can continue using my cane; no need yet for a walker.  But I want to play safe.  I have a roll-aider.  No burden if it avoids a fall.

See how good life is in Western Civilization?   Attaway, you Judeo-Christian civilization!

All American

My son knows who my favorite college football teams are, so yesterday he called to invite me to his house to see Boston College play Missouri, and at the same time, Notre Dame play Wisconsin.  (You know who I’m for, even though Wisconsin has a player named Kuechli, a decidedly Swiss name).  Both games started at noon, so it was a double-header.

Boston College won by scoring two consecutive goals in overtime, while Notre Dame had two interceptions, with goals for them, in the last few minutes.  To add to all this triumph, Freddy and Paula served us lunch, with my favorite, cream cheese and lox on a Kaiser roll (bagel’s too hard), bought at a Jewish deli.
